Honestly mass livestock slaughter is one of those industries that just could not exist outside of a production driven economy that uses coerced labour. This coercion and precarity is what forces workers to shut down their own empathy and transform it into anger towards the animals they’re slaughtering, a process facilitated by the factory model that turns animals into objects.
I know I already said this but my kids dad grew up on a small farm in Greece where they slaughtered their own animals and shot pests, and even he couldn’t handle this work. He had nightmares about his job in the abattoir, about the wall of pigs heads on spikes (where they’re stored so the snouts and cheeks can be cut off) where he discovered that pigs have different coloured eyes like humans do. He couldn’t interact with people without seeing them being slaughtered and cut up. He couldn’t hold our son without imagining him being killed and hung up on a hook, he couldn’t have sex with me without seeing my body as a carcass and thinking of how I would be cut up. It was the only time in his whole life that he stopped eating meat.
I don’t think animal slaughter is inherently bad nor is it something I would wish away with a magic wand, but the difference between subsistence hunting and farming vs industrial animal agriculture is enormous to the point where they’re just frankly incomparable. I once had a conversation with an elderly man who grew up on a small farm and he started crying when he told me how the farm was sold and he, hired as a worker, was traumatised by being forced to brutally slaughter animals he had a great fondness for and had had no problem slaughtering for his own food prior, because the methods and the scale were so vastly different.
Everyone trying to turn this into a vegan thing is just wilfully ignorant tbh
